2012 Range Rover Land Rover Evoque

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is the Land Rover I've been waiting for! It looks fantastic, yet the engineering within it is perhaps even more impressive. Like all Land Rovers, the Evoque offers perhaps the most sophisticated and capable off-roading equipment available, but unlike other Land Rovers the Evoque delivers the complete package: acceptable fuel economy, good performance and an interior as inviting as the exterior.
I managed about 20 mpg in the Evoque (other Land Rovers achieved less than 16 mpg in my care), which is quite good for this class of car, yet I still enjoyed impressive acceleration and comfortable cruising. It just gets better. The interior sports the nicest materials I have ever seen or touched in any car, and the panoramic sunroof is just the proverbial icing on the cake. The Evoque is brilliant. The Range Rover Evoque is a great new design that attracts a lot of attention. This new addition to the Range Rover lineup offers traditional Range Rover cachet, style and design cues with a sleek profile and a smaller, more efficient package. The Evoque Coupe feels lighter and more nimble than anything else with a Range Rover badge, and our test car was equipped with the optional MagneRide suspension. The turbocharged direct-injection 2.0-liter engine delivers good power at 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque, and the wide torque band combined with the 6-speed automatic provides power when you need it and good fuel economy. Permanent AWD, electronically controlled Haldex center coupling and the latest electronic aids provide the off-road ability required by the Range Rover name. The Dynamic package includes perforated leather seats and bright accents. Accelerating from a stop I experienced an unusual delay in throttle response, but I think it may have been caused by left-foot braking. –Mike Meredith

Range Rovers through the years have for the most part been large, square SUVs, but no longer. The new Evoque is about as un-square as an SUV can be. With sleek lines, an angled roof and large wheels, it looks like a futuristic Range Rover. After seeing it in pictures, I was surprised at how small the Evoque is. I'm average height and I can see over the roof. But the surprise continues when you climb inside and find a large, roomy cabin that comfortably seats four. The panorama roof adds to the spacious feel. Cargo space is not very big, mainly due to the rear-sloping roof, but it is certainly usable for groceries and other everyday fare. The Evoque is also quite enjoyable to drive. There's plenty of power, and with full-time AWD the Evoque is very quick off the line. Yet its small size and aerodynamic styling contribute to impressive fuel economy for an SUV. The only barrier to wanting an Evoque in my garage is that prices start in the mid-$40K range and can easily be optioned up to over $60K. But it is arguably the best premium crossover on the market, so maybe it's worth the price. –Perry Stern
