Car Dealer Fraud: Packing the Contract with Add-on Products

You think that auto dealers cannot scam you. You are definitely wrong. They are able to do anything to make an extra profit even to violate a law. After all that there is no wonder why car dealers have such a shady reputation.

Contract packing scam is one of the most discreet car dealer tricks. Adding “back end” products to the deal is a way dealers earn their extra profit. That`s why they practice numerous tricks to manipulate consumers and force them to buy add-on products such as GAP insurance, credit life insurance, rustproofing, paint sealant etc. Most often buyers are told that the «back-end» are obligatory and included with the car. If customer applies to financing through dealer he may be pressured to buy aftermarket products with the excuse that it`s required by finance organization.

Deceitful can also wrap add-on products into the deal without disclosing it to the buyer. This scam usually happens when the customer pays attention to monthly payment only. For instance, he may be told that his monthly payment is $300; at the same time it won`t be disclosed that $250 is for vehicle and $50 for aftermarket product.

How to avoid payment packing?

Payment packing scam can easily be avoided by asking the dealer to

· to disclose car`s sale price

· never negotiate car price based on a monthly payment

· disclose the terms of the deal

· disclose the calculated finance rate

By asking the dealer to disclose all these items upfront you make him give you an accurate payment, otherwise they risk a visit from the Attorney General Office or Department of Motor Vehicle.

Another option to avoid car dealer fraud and trick with your monthly payments is to get approved auto loan before going to the dealership. If you arrange the financing on your own you automatically avoid packing scam as you don`t have to negotiate the payments with the dealer.

But if you`re still financing through the dealer the following recommendations will help you to avoid packing scam:

· Read the contract carefully and check whether there are any items you haven`t authorized

· If a salesperson tells you that some items have been included for free, don`t trust him; always check whether you haven`t been charged for these “free” items

· if you find any high-profit items included “packed” in your contract which you don`t want to buy, just put a line through them and tell the salesperson that you won`t pay for them.If after signing the contract you found out that it was packed with add-ons without disclosure attend this matter as quickly as possible as any delay works in the dealer`s favor and is considered as a silent acceptance. Immediately contact car dealer fraud attorney to get a legal advice. If the dealer won`t cancel service contract, GAP insurance or any other add-on product packed in the contract you can sue him and get a full refund.
