The Know All Guide To Looking After Your Car During Winter

It seems as if summer was only a week ago, however we’ve said goodbye to those long hot summer days and welcomed the chill of autumn. Even though the worst part about autumn is the colder winds and the occasional down pour of rain, we have nothing to worry about when it comes to driving. However, after autumn we have to cope with the unpredictable and frankly annoying weather changes which come with the seasonal transformation of winter. As soon as winter strikes we should already be prepared for what the weather might bring, but in most cases people often overlook to make sure their car is fully prepped for what the harsh weather conditions may bring.

If you’re a new driver or you’ve been driving a while and want to make sure you’re ready for winter than this handy little guide will remind you of what you need to do to make sure your car is ready for winter.

Tires

As soon as winter is approaching you can expect to see tire adverts popping up left, right and centre advertising you to purchase winter tires. In the UK the installation of winter tires is not mandatory compared to colder countries, however it is advised.

It may just seem like a ruse by tire companies to purchase new tires, however, the difference between your summer and winter tires is extraordinary. Replacing your tires come winter you’ll be able to feel the difference of how easily your car seamlessly drives over badly surfaced roads effected by the bad weather and how your car grips when surfaces are either wet or icy. It may seem pricey but you have to ask yourself how much you value your safety and the safety of others.

Car cover

Preparing for winter is all about thinking ahead, which is why it’s a good idea to purchase a winter car cover in advance. These covers will stop your windows from icing over which will save you from having to spend mornings de-icing your car. However, depending on the type of car you have finding the right cover can be expensive, if you can’t spare the expense of purchasing a cover then trying putting an old towel or blanket over your windows. If that doesn’t work you can always use newspapers.

Make sure to thoroughly check over your car

We often forget to check our car regularly especially when it comes to fluid levels, however it’s essential you do a thorough check over your car. You will need to do the following things:
  • Check the depth of your tread on your wheels, purchase winter tires if necessary.
  • Monitor your levels of oil, brake fluid and water.
  • Check the pressure of your tires.
  • Make sure you have anti-freeze in your radiator and windscreen fluid.
  • Make sure all your bulbs work in your lights.
  • Check that your battery is charged and in full working order as you will be relying on it a lot more during the colder months.

Be prepared

Make sure you have the following items in your car as it’s better to be prepared, especially when the weather gets bad:
  • De-icing equipment
  • First aid kit
  • Torch
  • Blanket
  • Hi-Vis jacket
  • Water/High energy snack food
  • Small tool kit

Some of these items may seem odd but if you get stuck on a road then you will want to be kept warm and hydrated.

So as winter slowly approaches we can be preparing ourselves and our car with this handy little guide.
